What is Odyssey of the Mind?

Odyssey of the Mind is a team problem-solving program for regional, state, & international competitions. It is a program that fosters team Collaboration and Innovation, preparing creative minds to implement multidisciplinary perspectives, and process development and practice.

 

Competition Problems:

Long Term Problem – the team has to create, plan, design, & build a working solution over a 6 month period - there are Five Long Term problem options – Vehicle, Technical, Classics, Structure, & Theatrical (see attached sheet)

Short Term Problem – Spontaneously solve a given verbal or hands on problem in 3-10 minutes with materials provided.

 

Team Dynamics:

3-7 members per team:
    Division 2:  6-8th grades    
    Division 3:  
9th – 12th grades

Cost:

$100.00/person participation fee (scholarships available on request)

State Competition – additional fee required when held out of town ($40)

World Finals – optional & requires additional fund raising and/or Tax Credits to participate.

 

Time Commitments:

Determined by each team – usually set for half day Saturday, at least 3 times a month, starting in September. Three Spontaneous Marathon events held on Saturdays will be scheduled this year.

On Line Registration Deadline - Friday September 9th –on-line registration form completed for student and parent participation, OM Contract signed, and fee paid.  

 

Regional Tournament – First weekend, March 2012 – date TBD.

 

State Tournament – Third weekend, March, 2012 – date TBD (Qualifying teams only). 

 

World Finals - May 23th-26th, 2012 at Iowa State University (Qualifying teams only). 

 

Volunteers: 

TPA parent volunteers are probably the most essential ingredient to having a great Odyssey of the Mind program for the students.  We will be looking for volunteers to be coaches, assistant coaches, serve as judges or volunteers at regional competition, drivers, catering, and a host of smaller jobs.
